Lewis announced the next author program. On Friday, June
5, Maurine Walpole Liles, author of Rebecca of Blossom
Prairie will speak, sponsored by the Friends of the
Library.
Lewis explained that the Friends now have taken over
responsibility for three programs: (1) the author's
series, (2) the children's Summer Reading Club, and (3)
outreach service to nursing and retirement homes. This
service will begin with one retirement home and Elizabeth
Neuman will be the Friends coordinator.
Under new business, the expiration of Advisory Board terms
was discussed. Gibson moved that the Board recommend that
Jackie Alsobrook, Bill Hagood, and Rogene Patterson be
renamed to the Board. Rex seconded the motion. The Board
unanimously passed the motion and will send the
recommendation to the City for approval. The Secretary
will so notify the City Manager.
Alsobrook reported on the USSR (Uniform State Service
Region) proposed by the Texas State Legislature, which
would use Council of Governments regions to determine
library system boundaries. This proposal would gut our
funding and hurt all small libraryies, particularly in
this part of Texas. Our region would be cut from 1 1/2
million to 1/2 million dollars. She urged Board members
to be aware of opportunities to advise our legislators
that this is not good legislation.
Lewis announced that the preliminary budget will be going
in soon. The schedule of the budget process was
discussed, but Lewis will probably not discuss the actual
budget with city administrators until August. She did
advise, however, that automation will be included as a
line item.
Lewis announced that Bill Hagood's Mother died. Alsobrook
moved that the Board give a memorial book in her honor,
with Gibson seconding, and the Board approving. The Board
also agreed to send a card to Virginia Gibbs, who had
suffered a fall.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 PM.
