MINUTES
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
Wednesday, June 21, 1989
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session, June
21, 1989, at 4:00 P.M. in the Library Gallery with Chairman Bill
Hagood presiding and the following members present: Jackie
Alsobrook, Virginia Gibbs, Jean Gibson, William Neely, Rogene
Patterson, and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Absent were Beth Shelton
and Eric Tate. Library Director Beverly Lewis Campbell was present.
The May 17, 1989 meeting minutes were approved as circulated.
Mrs. Campbell presented the Budget report, noting the Department has
expended 58.46% of its total budget and approximately $42,000 of the
$50,000 budgeted for books and other collection materials.
Monthly circulation continues to increase and in May the Library
circulated 24% more items than in the same month last year. The
Statistical Report shows a total increase for this year to date of
18% from last year. Mrs. Campbell said June 20th was the largest
circulation to date and 1,100 items were checked out - about half
juvenile and half adult titles.
She explained the Dial -A -Story machine malfunctioned in the last
electrical storm and has been sent to the manufacturer for repair.
However, the telephone recording now advises callers to come to the
Library and check out a good book to read.
Accessions totaled 159 adult fiction, 179 adult non - fiction, 75
juvenile fiction, and 36 juvenile non - fiction titles. Mrs. Campbell
noted only 16 videocassettes arrived out of a large order of mostly
instructionals.
The Chairman said the City Council of the City of Paris had approved
the reappointment of Board Members Jackie Alsobrook, William Hagood,
and Rogene Patterson for terms of three years each, beginning July
1, 1989, and ending June 30, 1992.
Mrs. Campbell noted the Agreement Form had been approved by the City
Council of the City of Paris for use when exhibits are on loan to
the Library. A copy is attached. The Coca Cola exhibit, most of
which is from the Mr. & Mrs. Johnny Williamson of Paris, is still in
place.
Regarding a detection system, Mrs. Campbell said she had visited
four libraries and still had two more to visit. Two systems
evaluated to date include (1) CheckPoint and (2) Tattle Tape. The
former utilizes a sensing beeper placed under the pocket of the book
which would have to be removed when the Library's technical systems
are automated. The latter, a 3 M product, utilizes a magnetic strip
in the binding which could still be effective after automation is in
place. Both systems cost between $15,000 and $20,000. She advised
the goal is to have a detection system functioning before the 1990
major reference books arrive but the weeding project must be
completed first.
