MINUTES
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
Wednesday, September 20, 1989
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular
session September 20, 1989, at 4 P.M. in the Library
Gallery with Chairman Bill Hagood presiding. Members
attending were Jackie Alsobrook, Virginia Gibbs, Jean
Gibson, Rogene Patterson, Beth Shelton, William Neely,
Eric Tate and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Library Director
Beverly Lewis Campbell was present. Absent was Claire
Haslam, President of the Friends of the Library.
The August 23, 1989, Minutes of the Board were approved as
circulated.
Mrs. Campbell presented the Budget Report, stating we are
91.66% into the fiscal year and the entire department has
expended 83.23% of its funds. However, she advised the
department should be nearly on target with the budget at
fiscal year's end.
In the Statistical Report, Mrs. Campbell noted circulation
continues to increase and a projection is for it to reach
125,000 by year's end. Interlibrary loans were up and the
Dial -A -Story is back in operation and receiving many calls
from area children after having been out of operation for
several weeks.
On the monthly accession lists were the following: 105
adult fiction, 151 adult non - fiction, 15 juvenile fiction,
29 juvenile non - fiction and 17 video titles. Mrs.
Campbell advised the Board that selection criteria
included reviews, awards, best seller lists, and
especially patron preferences. She noted mysteries,
westerns, historical fiction and adventure /espionage
stories are the most popular and frequently circulated
fiction titles in the Library.
The Library Assurance System will be installed in October.
The Library staff and volunteers will receive training
about the system before installation. The staff will
"tag" the collection by inserting a magnetic strip into
each item during the two days the Library will be closed.
She plans to publicize this new system and hopes the
newspaper will take a picture, too.
Mrs. Campbell advised the Board about the materials
account in the City budget, explaining that from the total
amount, nearly $4,000 was committed upfront to periodical
subscriptions and 18% to annual reference and non - fiction
materials. The remainder of the funds are then available
for other additions to the collection.
