MINUTES
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
June 13, 1990
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular
session, June 13, 1990, at 4 P.M. in the Library Gallery
with Bill Hagood, Chairman, presiding. Present were
members Jackie Alsobrook, Virginia Gibbs, Jean Gibson,
Beth Shelton, Frances Ellis, Secretary, Bill Neely, and
Eric Tate. Beverly Lewis Campbell, Library Director, and
Claire Haslam, President of the Friends, attended. Rogene
Patterson was absent.
Minutes of the May 17, 1990, meeting were approved as
circulated.
The Director discussed the City Budget Report, noting the
same accounts - maintenance and supplies - were still over
and would be through the end of the fiscal year.
She reported the total circulation of 92,936 books this
year is a 18% increase over last year. May was 38% busier
than last year. During the ten May evenings, 819 items
circulated, a nearly equal number of adult and juvenile
items. There were 40 memorial contributions in May.
Accessions included the following titles: 294 adult
non - fiction, 227 adult fiction, 47 juvenile non - fiction,
and 82 juvenile fiction.
She reported the Summer Reading Club had four sponsors:
Sonic, McDonalds, Pizza Inn, and a new one, Whataburger.
The first three programs held were very successful: 98
attendees at the first, 350 at the second (Ronald McDonald
in Bywaters Park), and 72 for painting on the parking lot.
She complimented The Paris News for their Reading Program
"Reading Challenge" and advised the Publisher, Michael
Graxiola, read the story in the first program.
Mrs. Alsobrook and the Director participated in a workshop
about the Texas Conference on Libraries, and discussed the
need for all members to attend the fall regional meetings
(October 6 in Commerce and October 20 in Richardson) in
preparation for the 1991 White House Conference on
Libraries and Information Services. City Manager, Michael
Malone, has been proposed as a delegate to the State
Conference in early 1991, and Mrs. Alsobrook wants to be
one also.
