PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />MARCH 19, 1997 <br />MINUTES <br />The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, March 19, 1997, at 4 PM in <br />the Texas History Room. Chairman Beth Shelton presided and these members were present:, Toni Donnan, <br />Joe Rex, and Keitt Wood. Friends President Kathie Gibbs and Library Director Beverly Lewis were also <br />present. Absent were Jackie Alsobrook, Virginia Gibbs, Rogene Patterson, Ralph Rodgers, and Secretary, <br />Frances Ellis. <br />The February 26, 1997, Minutes were approved as distributed. <br />The Budget Report was not available from the City Finance Office. <br />Circulation to date is 15.9% ahead of last year and 115,570 items have been checked out in the first five <br />months of this fiscal year. February was also ahead of last year because 24,494 items circulated, which <br />was a 15% increase. <br />1,379 new books, videos, and audio books were added to the collection in February. <br />Training continues with Billy the Book. <br />Ms. Lewis advised the Library will participate in many activities during National Library Week and Week <br />of the Young Child April 14 - 18. She distributed a flyer which noted daily storytimes at the Library and in <br />area stores, read aloud events at senior citizen centers, and the luncheon Monday, April 14 featuring The <br />First Lady of Texas, Laura Bush, as keynote speaker. <br />Ms. Lewis advised the Library will participate for the first time in Kids Safe Saturday, March 22 at the <br />Hunt Center on the PJC campus. The outreach services van will be on display and there will be a booth <br />inside, too, where staff will distribute "Reading Keeps Kids Safe" activity books. <br />A special event during National Library Week will be the Storytime Celebration Monday, April 14 at 1:30 <br />PM at the Library. First Lady Mrs. Bush will read to children who have earned the privilege of attending <br />by being the top accelerated readers in their grades. The program will also include a puppet show, poetry, <br />and stories by the library staff. <br />Friends President Kathie Gibbs said 176 persons have paid to attend the spring benefit luncheon March 24 <br />when Dallas entertainer Jane Willingham will present a musical book review about Cole Porter. <br />The meeting adjourned at 5:00 PM <br />Beverly Lewis, Acting Secretary Date Approved <br />
