MINUTES OF THE
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
JANUARY 27, 1987
The Board of Adjustment of the City of Paris met Tuesday, January 27, 1987,
5:15 P.M. in the Conference Room of the City Hall Annex.
Chairman F.D. Mallory, III called the meeting to order with the following
members present: Richard Nafe, Alec Woods, Bill Lightfoot and J.P. Shull.
Chairman Mallory opened the public hearing to consider the petition of
Cora Mae Wilson for a variance to Section 9 -501 (1) of the City of Paris
Zoning Ordinance on Lot 5, Block A of Overton Heights Addition located at
1240 S.E. 20th Street.
Ms. Wilson told the Board that she lived alone and was handicapped to the
point of having to use a walker or a wheelchair to get around. She said
she wanted to cover the existing circular drive in front of her house to
protect her getting in and out of her car. The carport would be approxi-
mately 8 feet from the front property line instead of the required 25 feet.
She pointed out the problems involved in placing the carport at the rear of
the house and cited a similar structure in front of a house on Clark Lane
which was attractive. She emphasized the fact that the structure would be
designed to add to the house and neighborhood instead of detracting from it.
Several persons were in attendance objecting to the proposal. Ben Vaughn,
1225 20th S.E., Mary Alice Jackson, 1220 20th S.E. and Greg Darnell, 1250
20th S.E. spoke in opposition saying that to build in front of the house
would obstruct the view of on the street and devalue their investment.
Mr. Vaughn pointed out that he had studied the property for construction of a
garage or carport behind the house and that it could be done. It would involve
more expense due to the need for a new concrete drive to get to the rear.
Board members were given the opportunity to comment on the matter and Mr. Woods
stated he felt there was good reason for the neighbors to object. Mr. Nafe
stated he remembered when the one on Clark Lane was approved, but pointed out
that no one objected to it. Mr. Lightfoot said that other alternatives should
be considered by Ms. Wilson including the possibility of an extended porch roof
to provide partial protection from adverse weather conditions
Following these comments, a motion was made by Mr. Lightfoot, seconded by Mr.
Woods, to deny the petition. The motion carried 5 ayes, 0 nays.
Chairman Mallory suggested to Ms. Wilson that should she propose something
similar to an extended roof over a front porch, the Board would be glad to
consider it.
There being no further business to consider, the meeting adjourned.
n
`e N.
