762
Mr. Malone's strong point is his ability to hire good people, let them
do their job, and leave them alone.
Bill Bone, 580 33rd S. E., came forward said that Mayor Clifford
-- mentioned a lot of good changes that he certainly helped to bring
about. Bill Bone said another thing is that Manager Malone came to the
Council and wanted the job so bad he would take it for $25,000.00 a
year and furnish his own vehicle, he wanted the job, so over his
protest because he was not a City Manager, had never been one, and had
really never held a job, and he did not recommend him for city council,
but he was hired by four members of the Council. Mr. Bone stated that
Mr. Malone has just about caught up with Mr. Doty at his current
salary, and you will have to look up his perks, you will have to figure
those, he is right at $100,000.00 a year if you count his perks. Mr.
Bone said that they talked to over 2,000 citizens on the street, and in
his getting petitions signed there were three names came up at the
city, Mr. Haynes was number one, Mr. Clifford was number two, and Mr.
Malone was number three to get rid of, and probably the biggest mistake
the Council has made was using Reed and Stowe.
Councilman Jenkins, Councilman Neeley, Allen Boyd, and Councilman
Fulbright spoke to the audience assuring them that the City of Paris is
being operated properly, and that the City Manager was doing an
excellent job.
Mr. Henry Burress came forward telling the Council and the audience
that he came to Paris in 1950, and said he had worked with the city on
occasions, and he looks at Paris with much pride because we have a good
town. Mr. Burress pointed out that our parks and streets are nice, and
we are not giving enough credit for the good things that are being
done. Mr. Burress said he knows Mr. Conder real well, and he knows
that he is sincere, but he hated to see the city have this much
turmoil. Mr. Burress said he wants to enjoy Paris, and he wants pride
in Paris when he drives through, and said Paris is a good place to live
with a lot of features.
There being no further business, ;the adjo urned.
ERIC S. CLI , MAYOR
ATTEST:
MATTIE CUNNINGHAM, CITY ERK
