1472:
Regular Council Meeting
February 13, 2012
Page 6
COUNCIL IN DISTRICTS 1, 2, 3 AND 6 FOR THE ENSUING TWO YEARS;
DESIGNATING POLLING PLACES; ORDERING NOTICES OF ELECTION TO BE
GIVEN; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
Interim City Manager Gene Anderson explained this Resolution identified the location of
the polling places and reflected a plan to consolidate the polling places for Districts 1 and 2. He
said in the past, the polling place for District 1 was at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds and the
polling place for District 2 was held at Thomas Justiss Elementary School. Mr. Anderson said
with the current redistricting, the Red River Valley Fairgrounds was now located in District 2;
that the County and Paris Independent School District both conducted elections at the Red River
Valley Fairgrounds for various elections; and that the Red River Valley Fairgrounds was
centrally located between Districts 1 and 2. He also said that this resolution called for a plan to
consolidate Districts 3 and 6 with a common polling place located at the Lamar County
Courthouse Annex. Mr. Anderson stated that the District 3 polling place was now located in
District 4 and the polling place for District 6 remained in the same district but was not centrally
located within the District. He said that the Lamar County Courthouse Annex was routinely used
as a polling place for City, County, State and Federal Elections and that it was centrally located
within the City of Paris.
A Motion to approve this item was made by Council Member McCarthy and seconded by
Council Member Frierson. Motion carried, 7 ayes — 0 nays.
16. Deliberate and act on RESOLUTION NO. 2012 -009: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, TEXAS, AUTHORIZING AND APPROVING
THE EXECUTION OF A CONTRACT BETWEEN THE CITY OF PARIS AND THE
LAMAR COUNTY ELECTIONS ADMINISTRATOR TO ASSIST, COORDINATE,
SUPERVISE AND HANDLE CERTAIN ASPECTS OF ADMINISTERING THE
GENERAL ELECTION FOR MAY 12, 2012, FOR THE CITY OF PARIS; MAKING
OTHER FINDINGS AND PROVISIONS RELATED TO THE SUBJECT; AND
DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
Mr. Anderson said it had been the City Clerk's goal to combine polling places with
Lamar County to enable citizens to vote at one location for local and state candidates and/or on
issues. He said contracting with the County Elections Administrator will allow the jurisdictions
to share the costs of election workers and to use direct recording electronic (DRE) devices. Mr.
Anderson stated the estimated cost for the General Election in May 2012 was $8,007.01, which
included an administrative fee to be paid to the County Elections Administrator.
A Motion to approve this item was made by Council Member Pickle and seconded by
Council Member Wright. Motion carried, 7 ayes — 0 nays.
